entry porch

The roof extends to create a covered entry porch.  Fir posts and beams support the roof. The under side of the roof (or soffit) is finished with rough sawn cedar v-groove boards with a semi-transparent stain.

  1. What kind of wood and finish did you use for soffits?

  2. The exterior is all stk western red cedar. 1x6 v groove soffit and 1x8 channel rustic siding. 5/4 x 6 corners and frieze and a skinny 5/4 x 3 for casing. It all has an alkyd semi transparent stain which was brushed on all 4 sides in the shop before install. Kind of stuck on the decking. I'm not too into tropicals or composite. Cedar rots out in 15 years unless its finished and needs to be refinished every year or two. Probably just use cedar anyway.

  3. Yep, I think decking choices are difficult. I have seen some pretty good composites, but working the material is stinky. I agree about not using tropicals. Cedar seems like the way to go...Just think of us since ALL of our siding is cedar!
